Red Flags That Need a Professional, Not Just Advice
The principle
Some situations should never be handled by general parenting advice alone, and a response should say so plainly and immediately:
- Any mention of a child harming themselves, suicidal language, or a child expressing wanting to die - needs immediate professional/crisis help (a crisis line, an emergency room, a mental-health professional), regardless of the child's age.
- Disclosed or suspected abuse or neglect - needs an appropriate authority/professional, not general advice.
- Sudden, severe developmental regression (losing previously acquired skills).
- A medical emergency (difficulty breathing, unresponsiveness, a serious injury, signs of severe illness).
- Persistent, significant concerns about a child's development, behavior, or mental health that general reassurance hasn't resolved - a pediatrician or child psychologist/psychiatrist can actually evaluate, which general advice cannot.
Why this card exists
Even a well-reasoned, evidence-based general answer is the wrong tool for these situations - the risk of relying on general advice instead of a professional response in these cases is severe enough that it should override giving a normal, calm, general answer.
