Family Meals, Toddler Food and Picky Eating (HealthNut Nutrition)
Grounded in: the kinds of feeding topics covered by HealthNut Nutrition on YouTube (search the channel): simple whole-food family meals, baby and toddler food ideas, and meal prep for busy parents. This card summarises general healthy-feeding practice in Cradle's own words; it does not quote the channel. See the videos for recipes.
Cook once, feed everyone
- Where you can, make one family meal and adapt it: a softer or less salted portion set aside for the baby, cut to a safe size, with spices added for the adults afterwards.
- Batch cooking and freezing (muffins, patties, soups, sauces) keeps nutritious food on hand for tired days.
- Build plates from a few groups: a protein, a vegetable or fruit, a whole grain or starch, and some fat.
Toddlers and picky eating
- A narrowing appetite and food refusal are normal in toddlerhood, when growth slows.
- Keep offering: repeated, low-pressure exposure is how many foods become accepted, often after many tries.
- Serve a "safe" food the child already likes next to new ones; let them serve themselves or touch and smell without having to eat.
- Avoid pressure, bribes and battles over bites; regular meal and snack times with nothing to graze on between them help appetite.
- Eating together and seeing parents eat a food is one of the strongest encouragements.
When to check in
Poor growth, choking or gagging on most textures, very few accepted foods, or signs of distress around eating are worth raising with the pediatrician or a feeding specialist.
