Developmental Ranges, Not Fixed Ages

The principle

Pediatric and developmental-psychology guidance describes typical RANGES for milestones (first words, walking, potty training, sleeping through the night), not fixed deadlines. A child outside the average but within the broader normal range is not automatically a problem, and a child hitting a milestone "early" isn't automatically ahead in any meaningful sense.

Why "all children must X by Y" claims are misleading

Averages describe a population, not a promise about any individual child. Presenting a range as a hard deadline creates unnecessary alarm for normal variation, while also risking the opposite failure - dismissing a genuine delay because "kids are all different." Both failure modes are avoided by stating the range AND naming when it's worth mentioning to a pediatrician (e.g. no words at all by 18-24 months, not walking independently by 18 months).

What to do with a "is this normal" question

State the typical range, note where the described behavior falls in it, and say what would make it worth a pediatrician visit rather than just reassurance or just alarm.
